Starting a DPAC Advocacy Program - Susan Wilson

This session provides an overview of the BCCPAC Advocacy Project and guidance on getting started in your district.

Susan Wilson has over 20 years of advocacy experience and was previously part of the BCCPAC Advocate Project back in the early 2000's and since that time has been a tireless advocate for BC Public education and making sure all of the youth in the BC Public education system get what they need.   Susan was given the honour of lifetime member of BCCPAC in 2016. Having helped her children succeed and graduate she has gone on to assist many districts and families in advocating for the needs of their children.

In this session, members are invited to share insights on some of BCCPAC’s key focus areas. Following a short introduction, participants can join breakout discussions on topics chosen from registrant suggestions. These may include membership benefits, communication and transparency, programs and services, resolutions and advocacy, or others. Your input will help guide the board’s understanding of member priorities as we plan for a stronger, more responsive BCCPAC.

The Art of Collective Decision-Making: Navigating PAC/DPAC Governance - Vea Coronado, Crown and Calling

Effective governance and decision-making is vital for PACs/DPACs as they work to represent the voices of parents and students. This session explores the intricacies of making position statements/ decision-making that reflect a shared vision, balancing diverse opinions, and staying aligned with governing regulations. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding how the School Act governs PAC/DPAC operations/decision-making.
  • Compare governance under the Societies Act for insights into how organizational structures support collective decision-making.
  • Develop strategies for promoting inclusive and effective decision-making.
  • Learn methods for managing conflicts and building consensus.
  • Explore how BCCPAC and collaboration across DPACs can further help build a community of practice.

Vea is the Founder of Crown and Calling where she offers strategic facilitation, training, and one-on-one support to governing groups, non-profits, and professionals. She is also the Executive Director of BC Library Trustees Association, which provides support to public library boards and trustees all over the province. Outside of work, she spends her time advocating against human trafficking and over consumption through her love of sustainable fashion.
